Herb Spiral progress and a verge trash score November 18 2009

I won the battle with the bourgainvillea! Ok, ok let's have a bit of honesty Crone; I chatted to my neighbour who has a friend with a chainsaw. Et Voila, first layers are in place.

With the help of Tot #3 we built it up too this;

The next step will be lifting up the matting and folding it carefully up the exterior of the bricks and tucking it into the top. This will then be built up with some rocks on the final layer and rocks to hide all of the brickwork. I couldn't for the life of me think of any other way of doing a wicking bed herb spiral. Do you think it will work? I love experimentation :)

Oh and Boo (tot 3) calls it Baby Xavier's Spring Roll!

Now for the pics of my foraging around the burbs rubbish piles

I'm pretty chuffed to say the least. Now I just need to haul out the sewing machine and run up some cushions.

Wow Lara. I just love Xavi’s spring roll, so pretty. I think it will work. Good score on the furniture. Are you going to sew the covers out of weather proof fabric?

Yes. The sun is so harsh here and we honestly get horizontal rain at times LOL

Make sure you get a sturdy needle!!! You don’t want to kill the sewing machine

I will be interested to see how the wicking bit works. I can’t quite visualise it in that shape but that is not unusual for me.

Good Luck
Belinda

Yeah it took some time for me to think it out Belinda! I’m going to use a flexible soaker hose so that it bends around the curve of the spiral. I can only try, right?

If the matting is waterproof, it might be better to tuck it in halfway up the bricks, so that if you get a lot of rain it doesn’t completely waterlog your bed & drown the plant roots. The ‘wicking’ part is the soil + plants drawing the moisture up from the ‘pool’ area at the bottom. Then is can’t be overwatered. Looks lovely, by the way

Thanks ‘K’. This is only half the proposed height BTW. Once the matting is folded over I shall keep building up until it’s about a metre high in the middle section. I had to pilfer the pavers from other parts of the garden due to being fiscally challenged atm. I just need to source rocks now to complete. Oh and plants.

It looks good! And always good to find some bargains, esp. when you can personalise them.

Great to see you back blogging again
