Knickers to the lot of you! (Sept 21st 2009)

Did the title get your attention? LOL

I’m totally fed up of losing my knickers, or rather the elastic that’s in knickers circa 2009. What’s with wearing/washing and then elastic going after only a few months. Now it’s not like I only have one pair and wear them to death, nor is it that I buy the cheapest there is to buy; there’s frugal and there’s chucking money away, big difference! However, no matter how gently I treat them there is a tendency for the elastic to loosen so much that only a pair of jeans holds them up (wearing skirts and one’s knickers falling off just doesn’t bear thinking about)

So what to do? I’ve decided that I am going to look out for some nice soft organic cotton/lawn and make myself some pretty French Knickers and I might even do a pretty crochet lace border as well :)

Speaking of frugality, we’re renovating at Wit’s End. The Ensuite is having a complete overhaul from the ’70’s olive green nightmare which it currently is. Now I don’t know if any of you have done renovations lately but they cost the frigging earth! I’ve allocated a budget of $5k and not one penny more.

Here’s a pic of the current tiles/shower

Yeah, you got me.

I have to say that is one of the reason I really love my ones from Blessed Earth. They might have cost a bomb and be rather on the utility side of looks but with a rolled hem and normal elastic they last.. and when at some time in the future (I have had them 2 years already) the elastic lets go I can just thread some new stuff through and ’tis all good again.

Good luck on that renovation budget. I have heard they are wily things that have a habit of getting out of control.

Kind Regards
Belinda

There is a solution to the knickers-issue… bit like ‘who says I have to iron’…

Happy sewing/knicker-hunting!

Ah yes renovating costs. But seriously worth every cent. You won’t know yourself once it all done.

I don’t like to hang onto knickers for too long, so even though hubby teases me relentlessly for buying them, I go and get the 10 packs of cotton undies from Coles ($9.99!).

Did you know that laundry detergent rots elastic? (It was one of the many quirky but useful facts that I learnt whilst taking a lingerie making course at our local(ish) college! It’s the main reason that knickers and bras loose their ‘ping’ factor.

I wash all our undies, and anything containing elastane in a mixture of soap flakes and soda crystals. They then go into the machine on a purely rinse cycle, (which saves time and money). I’ve found that they last for much longer and keep their colour and shape so much better.

Loved the title and the article, keep up the good work!
