I've read that some people used catnit and other mints and that the asparagus grew right through it. I don't think strawberry root systems are any thicker really (less so if anything) so my guess is it would work. Having said this I do remember reading about living mulches on a farm notes page or something where they said it worked but impacted on the amount of the harvest. If you're just trying to conserve space I'd say go for it, but it you're just trying to outcompete weeds I think I'd use straw or something.
Asparagus doesn't like having it's roots disturbed and any time you want to redistribute your strawberry runners you will set your asparagus back. Also they are also both early spring producers so they will be actively competing with each other for nutrients to produce harvest.
hmmm... don't know if they will mix. Strawberries like an acidic environment, while asparagus like an alkaline environment. Both are gross feeders and so may compete for food.
Strawberries like legumes, such as beans and peas. Apparently they dislike cabbage.
Asparagus grow well wih parsley and coriander, as well as nightshades. My companion planting book says tomatoes, but I have also experienced good potatoes growing in the asparagus patch. Presumably eggplant and capsicums, etc would also be good.
Personally, I like to just leave my asparagus patch to its own devices. It really enjoys being undisturbed. xx
